The Night Children
They locked eyes across a smoky bar
She smiled coyly
He sauntered over and introduced himself
Nathaniel, Nate for short
Tall, dark, handsome
They had a few drinks and she was captivated
They exchanged numbers
He offered to walk her home
But she said no
Smiling to herself she left
She began to walk home in a happy daze
She felt something watching her
She thought nothing of it and continued on her way
She heard the little noises of the night
Rustling of the leaves
Squeaks and hisses of the small creatures
The she felt a breath on her neck
Without turning she broke into a frantic run
She felt something grab her arm
It pulled her into the bushes
Threw her to the ground
Tears squeezed out of her tightly closed eyes
She felt it’s breath on her neck
She opened her eyes and gasped
In the dim yellow glow, through the shadow of the thicket she saw
She cried out as teeth closed on her throat
And with her dying breath she murmured her last
‘Nathaniel…’
